The Beauty Of Baseball

Baseball: A ball game played between two teams on a field with a diamond-shaped circuit of four bases. It is played chiefly in the Us, Canada, Latin America and east Asia.

Taking A "Swing" At Things:

One of the most popular sports in the US and one of the most grossing sports in the world. If you look close enough at the diamond you can see the art within the game and I’ll be your guide to help you see it so let's take a “swing” at the art of baseball.

Baseball's Pastime:

One of baseballs popular nicknames is “America’s pastime” but its origins stretch farther from the United States, with roots in older bat and ball games played in England like you might have played in your backyard when you were younger. However the version we all know today was officially codified in the mid 19th century, with Alexander Cartwright’s rules laying the foundation for what would become the sport we know today.

The Poetry Of The Positions:

It’s a delicate balance of individual skill and team strategy and if you ask me that’s where the true beauty of baseball comes from, the responsibility of being a team. Every player on the field serves a purpose, contributing to a larger choreographed dance. Let’s break down each position and what they contribute to the poetry of the game!

1.Pitcher - The Maestro:

With each pitch they make the decision on what to throw. No matter what pitch, fastball, curveball, knuckleball etc the greatest pitchers understand rhythm intuitively, changing speeds and locations to keep batters off balance. A truly great pitcher transforms the mound into a stage, where every windup and release is a brushstroke on the canvas of baseball.

2.Catcher - The Guardian of the Beat:

Positioned behind home plate, the catcher is the strategist as they are both the strategist and protector. They have to read the opposing batter, call pitches, and frame throws with subtle movement. Their role includes endurance and intelligence, serving as the backbone of the defense while orchestrating the game's rhythm

3.First baseman - The Anchor:

Often the target of throws from across the infield, the first baseman must have quick reflexes and an impeccable glove. Their job is one of precision and steadiness, ensuring that outs are secured with grace and consistency

4.Second Baseman - The playmaker: (My former position so it’s the best position.) Agile and alert, the second baseman must turn double plays with ballet like fluidity. They move in sync with the shortstop, executing plays that feel like choreographed sequences in a dance.

5.Third Baseman – The Hot Corner:

Known for its fast, blistering hits, third base is a position of reaction time and courage. The third baseman must be fearless, charging bunts and snagging line drives with lightning-quick hands.

6.Shortstop – The Magician:
Arguably the most athletic position, the shortstop is the wizard of the infield. They chase down ground balls deep in the hole, make leaping throws, and command the field with an instinctual sense of movement. The shortstop’s rhythm is instinctive reacting in perfect sync with the flow of the game.

7,8 and, 9 The Outfielders - The Artist of Space:

The trio of outfielders left, center, and right must read the flight of the ball like seasoned painters studying a landscape. The center fielder, in particular, acts as the leader of the outfield, covering vast territory with an almost poetic understanding of space and timing. The rhythm of their movement tracking fly balls, cutting off hits, and making perfect throws adds to the game’s natural flow.

The Beauty Of The Sport In My Eyes.

I haven’t played a game of baseball since the year of 2015. I was around the age of 12 and I decided to quit playing the sport because my passions started to drift to things such as music and other forms of art. I’ve mainly put the sport off since I quit playing but recently something has been calling me back and I’ve started to study what attracted me to it and what is now attracting me to it. To help explain that I’m going to break it down into various aspects.

-The Community:

Some of my closest childhood friendships were forged on the diamond. Now, at 22, I haven’t talked to most of them since I moved schools back in 2017, but I still carry those memories with me. I may be a completely different person from who I used to be at that age and life moves on, but the connections built through baseball never really fade. I still to this day think about the chants we’d yell in the dugout and no matter how much time passes, and no matter how many differences we may have with each other now, I’ll always cherish the brotherly bond we created on the field.

-The Fun of the Sport:

There is so much fun packed into this sport, it’s one of the be beautiful things about the sport because no matter how bad you’d get beat you could always look forward to going back onto the field the next game. There’s nothing like the rush of stepping up to the plate, the anticipation as the pitcher winds up, and the crack of the bat when you connect just right. Baseball is fun because it’s unpredictable, because it’s a mix of precision and chaos, because even the best players fail most of the time but still get back up and try again. It’s a game where you can play with a smile on your face, where a simple game of catch can turn into a lifelong memory, and where, no matter how old you get, stepping onto the field still makes you feel like a kid again.

- Ball Is Life (sorry for the corny title lol):

Almost my entire childhood revolved around sports and baseball was always the main one that me and my family put our efforts into. My dad coached both me and my brother for every sport we played, rather if that was Baseball, Football or Basketball. Although we played these various sports baseball was always our favorite sport and was always our main focus. There wasn’t one summer day that went past where my brother and dad and I weren’t on the field and if we weren't playing it we’d be watching it rather if that was the North Carolina Tar-Heels or the Atlanta Braves, my family lived and breathed baseball and they still do considering my dad is the head coach of the local high school team and my brother is Physical Therapist who occasionally works with Athletes.

I also look back on the lessons I learned from playing that my dad and the game taught me. I learned to always try my hardest because there’s never such thing as failure when you put everything you got into it, I learned that there’s nothing more important than treating the people you’re sounded by with sportsmanship and respect, I learned that you don’t have to always do everything yourself because you’ll always have the people who have your back.

I am at a point in my life where I am getting ready to graduate college and the day that I fully move away from my family gets closer and closer. My childhood is behind me but when I think of my childhood, the first thing I always think of is throwing baseball in the backyard with my dad and brother. I think of these times I spent on the diamond with my family and my emotions always seem to get the best of me and that might be one of the main reasons the passion for baseball is coming back to me, as I’ll always be so grateful for these memories and the bond baseball has created within me with my brother and dad. The stains of red dirt will always be on my heart. <3
